Leake St, Graffiti Tunnel

Never would I have known that this place existed had it not been for the Dark Secrets: The Esoteric Exhibition - more on that in another post.

Nestled between two shops on Lower Marsh you could quite easily write this off as any other graffiti ridden, dodgy looking, fear for my life subway expecting to be mugged by some hooded youths the moment you step inside. But for those brave enough to venture into the dark and not judge a book by its cover, your eyeballs will be handsomely rewarded.

Speaking to one of the artists between sprays it turns out that there are no rules on what can be painted and where. If you think you can do better than what is there, lay down a base coat and add your work. It's that simple. And what can be drawn? Literally everything. There was a range from simple tags, quirky little drawings to full on huge work that was so detailed and well done it could only be described as beautiful.

What is the best part of this ever developing canvas, that is this subway, is the next time you visit the artwork would have changed and new work added. The three and half hours between taking a look around and after the Esoteric Exhibit there were already four artists painting over and creating a blank canvas for them to start from scratch on.

And yes, even the ceiling is not safe.
