It’s said that in London you’re never more than nine feet away from a rat, the same can be said for coffee shops I’m sure. It feels like Costa, Starbucks or Nero have an outlet on every street of the capital.

If you fancy getting your caffeine fix plus maybe something to nibble whilst in Fitzrovia but fancy somewhere with a bit of character than The Attendant is the perfect place.

This speciality coffee shop has taken up residence in a Victorian men’s urinals. Yes that’s right, you can sip coffee and have a snack in the place of a former gentleman’s convenience. Originally built in 1890 and in use until 1961 then sadly left empty for 50 years, this amenity was given a very thorough cleaning and a new lease of life.

Above ground the ironworks have been well looked after and the modern signage is sympathetic to the original architecture. Venture down the stairs and you’d be greeted by a full bank of original features still in situ. The porcelain urinals, tiling and systens are all present and make for an interesting surrounding.

It’s always nice to be greeted by ‘welcome to the toilet’ then promptly asked ‘what can I get you?’

Before you ask, no, there are no toilets to use.
